GLAESA purchased property on Hartel Rd. over twenty years ago, with the intent of eventually building a station there. The current location in downtown Grand Ledge isn’t suitable for a large new station, so GLAESA board members voted to build a new main station on Hartel, still within Grand Ledge city limits, but much closer to Oneida Township. Board members also unanimously approved a second smaller sub-station on the North end of the City. This was decided for two reasons: First, to ensure that there is adequate EMT and fire protection on both sides of the bridge in the event of a real tragedy should something ever occur to the bridge, road closure or other situation. Secondly, board members felt that it was important to keep a small sub-station near the most populated area of the district, while still ensuring that our first responders have the facilities and equipment necessary to keep Grand Ledge and Oneida Township safe.
GLAESA stands for the Grand Ledge Area Emergency Services Authority. There is NOT a Grand Ledge Fire Department. GLAESA is an independent fire authority created in the 1990s and at that time, incorporated the City of Grand Ledge, Eagle Twp., Oneida Twp., and Watertown Township. Eventually Eagle and Watertown formed their own fire authority called Looking Glass Regional Fire Authority. Today, GLAESA handles both fire and EMT services.
